Location
During a trip to Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, my wife and I were riding with friends who were showing us their favorite places in the Park. We were driving the road to Lamar Valley when we saw this herd of bison and pulled off the road to watch them. They were about 1/4 to 1/2 mile below us. We then noticed two wolves running down the ridge about 1 mile away. The bison also saw the wolves and started moving toward us to put distance between them and the wolves. Probably a precaution to protect the young calves (red dogs). The bison were cautious as they approached our vehicle and several other vehicles that had joined us. My DSLR camera had a long telephoto lens attached, so I had to lean out of the window with my small Canon Powershot camera to make this image. The herd walked between the vehicles, crossed the road, and continued to escape from the wolves. It is one of my favorite images from our visit.Time
This was made during mid-day in the springtime.Lighting
There was a high thin overcast sky that was perfect for this type of photograph.Equipment
I used a Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II camera. The settings were Aperture f/8, ISO 200, and Shutter 1/320.Inspiration
I liked the closeness of the bison herd with the Yellowstone Park background to establish a sense of place for the image.Editing
I processed the image in Lightroom. Nothing fancy. Just standard processing. In my camera bag
My main camera is a Canon R5. I also have a Canon M6 and a 720nm infrared-converted Canon M5. Lenses allow focal lengths from 14 to 400 mm and macro.Feedback
To capture this type of image the photographer needs to be ready for anything.
