Location
This photo was taken at my home on a farm in southwestern Ohio. I am a self taught photographer who enjoys being out in nature and photographing its beauty.Time
On this particular day in January, we had a recent winter storm come through and during the day it had warmed up just a hair for the sun to start melting the ice. It all started to freeze again that evening and the temperature was dropping rapidly. I could only stand to be outside for a half hour at max. I took this photo that evening just as the sun was starting to set.Lighting
I wanted to get the evening sun shining on the ice as well through the leaves. At that time of day, all the ice looked like little crystals shining everywhere. It was simply beautiful. I wanted to try to capture that in my photo while highlighting a focus point.Equipment
This was shot using a Nikon D5200 and a 18.0 - 55.0 mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. The only other equipment I used was a tripod.Inspiration
I was looking for a way to show the contrast between the sun and the ice and showcase it somehow. I thought that little leaf showed the contrast of those elements in nature beautifully. I was just hoping I would be able to capture what I saw in my mind's eye. I was happy with how it turned out.Editing
I did very little processing to this picture. I just did a little cropping, warmed it up a hair and adjusted the clarity some.In my camera bag
I normally carry a tripod, my camera, a couple of lenses, and some extra batteries. I also carry another strap that I like to use if I will be in situations where I may need both hands.Feedback
The weather and light can change abruptly. Look for the beauty in even the smallest things when this happens. Sometimes the most amazing detail that you never noticed will showcase itself. Also, take your time, be patient, and always enjoy the moment.
