Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo near our house, with enough insects around it because it stands near the forest and cattle pastures.

Time

It was a warm May day, it was around noon, and the insects were active.

Lighting

Even though it was noon, the low clouds gave my scene the ideal diffused light. Therefore, there are only minimally highlights on the beetle body and there are no significant shadows around the beetle.

Equipment

This photo was shot on a Nikon D700, with a special macro lens Micro Nikkor 105 mm f/2,8, ISO 400, aperture f/13, shutter speed 1/250. I photographed handheld without using a tripod and without a flash.

Inspiration

Macro is my very popular genre of photography. I like to roam around the house looking for interesting scenes suitable for macro. At home at the monitor, I look at details that are not easily visible to the naked eye.

Editing

I used only minimal adjustments in original editing software from Nikon - only Nikon Capture NX-2. Here I just slightly modified brightness, contrast, clarity and saturation.

In my camera bag

The contents of my robust Tamrac bag is primarily a powerful digital camera that I can rely on in every weather. Now I'm normally using the body Nikon D5 and the backup body Nikon D850. I normally wear Nikkor lenses 24-70 f/2.8 and 70-200 f/2.8. These "workers" have always been with me. On the "macro" action I take the excellent old micro lens Nikkor 200 f/4 or micro lens 105 f/2,8. For animals and birds photography I need to pack "heavier weight" - I'm using the lens Nikkor 400 f/2.8 and now also a new lens Nikkor 200 f/2 lens. The last two months I test the new mirrorless Nikon Z7 with my fast lenses.

Feedback

I prefer shooting in optimal lighting conditions without direct sunlight. I using a special macro lenses. It is very important to work with aperture and the distance of the object from the background. And of course it is important to keep the camera during exposure at rest without movement. This is very important because I usually shoot a macro handheld, without a tripod and additional lights.
