Behind The Lens

Location

This car is something of a Cape Cod Sudo-landmark in Brewster Ma on route 6A. It is located in front of Wayne's Antiques This was just too good to resist with all of the textures, rust and the creepy weird mannequin lady in sunglasses.

Time

I believe it was a somewhat over cast day around 3:00PM

Lighting

This is a testament to "Go ahead and take the shot" no matter what time of day or lighting is available if you can't come back at a better time The original shot was pretty drab as a result of the over cast weather. You could not even see the mannequin inside the car.

Equipment

I believed I used my old Google android phone 4G: Another testament to "Just take the shot" when the opportunity presents itself I did not have my Canon with me at the time

Inspiration

The amazing textures of all of it combined: the rusting car, the old license plate from Ohio, again-the creepy mannequin with sunglasses, the fabulous back drop of a cluttered yard of old antique pieces and parts, pots and pans, gravel and metal, light fixtures, old signs etc. Even the textures of the classic Cape Cod shingled building in the background. In short it was a smorgasbord of smooth and rough, old shabby and still shiny. It was a quirky weird moment and I loved it. I wanted to keep it.

Editing

Yes! This photo as mentioned above, was very drab and shadowy so I followed the following steps: 1) Do a preliminary exposure adjustment to see what you have to work with once better lit. 2) Go to lighting and proceed to test out the contrast possibilities 3) Then to increase the intensity of the darkness with black 4) Then to play with shadows. Is it better with more or less? 5) Then to increase highlights first and then test whites. Often I have to back off on whites and possibly contrast to bring back layers of texture again 6) On to color: I rarely if ever just increase saturation because it will often give the shot too much of an over manipulated unreal feel and read. I first up skin tone and then deep blue. Usually I can take these two to the max to get optimum impact without loosing the reality's plausibility factor 7) Then I go to POP: first I crank it up to see how the textures do in the particular shot. Sometimes the result is thrilling and sometimes it is too much and detracts from the subtle beauty. In this case I cranked it up to the max but the colors were then over the top so I reduced the saturation to minimum which without the use of POP would be black and white but with the POP turned on full blast colors come through and you often see a slight blue cast halo around things as seen at the roof line in this shot. I just adored how the muted colors seem to speak to and cast a the hue and mood of the faded-ness of time.

In my camera bag

I carry my canon camera, a telephoto lens, a macro lens, a tri-pod, a few filters and a hood. I am sure there is some lens cleaner and lens wipes, extra batteries etc. The truth is more and more often I just use my phone: Google 5G Android. I know that is not what people want to read but it is the truth. The day they make a phone with quality DSL I will never go back. What I loose in the exchange are poster printable, art printable pictures. They look terrific printed as long as I do not try to go too big with them which is limiting if I want to do a show again. I loved my Nikon FG back in the days before Digital and I could go huge with my photos using it. I miss that option but the trade off of being able to edit my photos on the spin of a dime because they are always with me has me caught between a phone and a beautiful Digital Camera "Case"

Feedback

Just take the shot! The really rare, beautiful, fanciful and fantastic opportunities so often happen as they say.. "But once in a life time" . If you see it ...pull the car over and take the shot. I could tell you in exacting glorious full color detail a few shots I failed to take. The images are emblazoned in my memory but no one will ever see them because I failed to follow my own iron clad rule. Unless I am assisting in death or the birth of a child I stop and take the shot. Five minutes is rarely going to be a make or break moment for a meeting or a deal. That said I always plan on being 15 minutes early to anywhere I go. That gives me a window to capture art along the way if it magically appears or 15 minutes to edit photo on my phone in the parking lot when I arrive early. Either way...I suggest you make taking the shot a priority. It adds so much to life! I see everything through the eye of the camera now and so I see so very much more of the beauty, intrigue and quirky weirdness of this glorious life and the world around me. Photo On people!
