One November evening I had an early dinner with my friends, during which I was telling my newest ideas for portraits - night portraits with the use of the city lights only. Some of my friends wanted to see how it would look like. We didn't think long, and since I had my camera with (as I came for dinner right after shooting at a client), we finished dinner and went out to the city to look for a suitable lighting. We went to the nearby area, Grands Boulevards (Paris), to one of my favourite cinemas - Le Grand Rex. The display windows where are placed posters, they give a lot of light, enough to make interesting portraits, and the street lights in the background create an interesting. This is one of portraits from my night portrait series, which I continue to take.Time
This photo was taken on one of November (or early December) evenings, probably between 7 and 9pm.Lighting
My idea was to take basic portrait on the street, where the street lights are visible in the background and with some light falling on the face. This could be light coming from either a shop window or some street advertisement as these give relatively enough light to illuminate the face. I found the proper spot right next to the cinema, where the light coming from the cinema adverts were able to give enough of light to take a photo without a tripod. It was quite windy and rather cold, my friend's eyes watered a bit. The lights of the poster were reflected in the slightly watery irises.Equipment
Camera: Canon 5d mark II, lens: Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8Inspiration
The beauty of one of Parisian areas, where I was living back then. Grand Boulevards, it's a small neighbourhood with quite a big street traffic and a lot of lights. I still like to go there for a walk, no matter if in summer or in the winter. The lights from constantly driving cars, city lights, lights from cafes makes this area absolutely wonderful and inspiring for any of the artistic explorations.Editing
Yes, I edited this photo in Adobe Photoshop, slightly changed the coloristic into more red/violet-ish. Also, added light to eyes of my friend:)In my camera bag
Usually I have my Canon camera, currently it's Canon 5ds.Feedback
sure - don't think too much about equipment. It is important, but very often not the most important:) Just go to the city and search for light. Night is a magical part of the day: it helps to hide many unnecessary or basically ugly objects which could distroy the atmosphere in the picture.
