Location
This photo was taken from the Rowena Crest Viewpoint which offers breathtaking views of the beautiful Columbia River Gorge in Oregon.Time
This was a morning shot, taken shortly after sunrise on October 29th 2017.Lighting
I captured this photo during golden hour because I wanted this image to give a warm and cozy feeling to better represent the season. I took advantage of the fog to create a contrast with the beautiful golden hour glow in order to produce a dramatic look, very characteristic of this time of the year.Equipment
The photo was taken with a Canon 6D and with a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L lens. A tripod was used to capture the car trails.Inspiration
Fall is my favorite season! The Pacific Northwest is gorgeous during this time of the year. Every October I make sure I find some time to make road trips around the PNW. On that particular weekend, I drove from Seattle to Oregon to capture some of the most iconic places covered in vibrant colors and also to find new ones. The Rowena Crest has one of Oregon’s most iconic roads and was of course on the list of places to check. This horseshoe curve is popular for car trails and the area in general is mostly photographed during spring. But because I’m a autumn fan, I always wonder how certain locations look like during the color peak of fall foliage. Fog was the cherry on top of the cake!Editing
Post-processing is important for fall images, it can help make the colors more vibrant and richer. For this photo in particular I went for a dramatic look and saturated yellow as the main tone, which perfectly matches the season. In the last stage, I also blended and added two car trails (each going in different ways) from shots I took during night time.In my camera bag
I have recently upgraded my Canon 6D to a Canon 5D III Mark. One of my fav landscape/cityscape lens is the wide-angle Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L. My mid-range lens is the canon 24-70mm. For zoom I use the Canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM and the Tamron150-600mm. In addition to a tall and robust tripod, I also carry everywhere a smaller one (manfrotto mini tripod) and a few ND filters.Feedback
Though this place is beautiful in every season, it is quite popular during spring, due to the wildflowers in bloom. I recommend to do some hiking in order to fully enjoy and explore the area. But be sure to respect the flora and wildlife. It’s important to also be attentive to poison oak, as well as ticks, and be careful driving up and down the road too, as the road curves often and wildlife, such as deer, are often spotted. To capture interesting and unique moments, try to be there during golden hour, sunrise or sunset.
