Three of us had set up in a small hollow, with the sow and her cubs about 150 yards away. After an hour or so, she began herding the cubs closer and closer to us...until she and her cubs got as close as you see in this shot. We were surprised, pleased...and a little anxious about this development. The reason she moved closer, I was told, was that she was moving her cubs closer to humans in order to protect them from predation by male Grizzlies. If you look at the far left horizon of the photo, you can see two grizzlies.
