Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken in my small home studio just outside Garstang in Lancashire.

Time

As normal for the UK the day was a it grim so I spent my time indoors practising lighting techniques

Lighting

I am very fond of high contrast black and white single light portraiture. This was a Yongnuo 560III with a 7" reflector using a 20degree grid. The split light works really well with this set up

Equipment

Shot with my Olympus O-MD E-M1, 75mm f1.8 zuiko @ f8, 1/250 ISO200. Single Yongnuo 560iii in 7" reflector with 20 degree grid camera left, slightly above. As this is a self portrait I operated the camera via the Olympus app on my phone

Inspiration

Inspiration for this image ... my emotional state. It's all too common for images of people to be fake, for them to "play up" to the camera. I like honest images of honest people. Emotions are nothing to be scared of, the more open you are about how you are feeling or how you have been made to feel the freer you will become.

Editing

Simple black and white conversion in Lightroom ... I try to keep post processing as minimal as possible

In my camera bag

This all depends on what I am doing. I own and use Olympus OM-D and Canon 6D. Which ever body it is though you can guarantee there will be at least two prime lenses in my bag!

Feedback

The smallest movement of a light or your model can vastly change the feel and look of an image, don't be afraid to experiment.
