This photo was taken at Photigy studio in Campbell, California. https://www.photigy.com/Time
This photo was taken during daytime, but all the light in the photo is artificial.Lighting
I used Broncolor lights - two strip boxes and a background light - and a smoke machine. Using the Broncolor lights I was able to shoot rapid series of 3-5 shots / sec, capturing every position of ballerina's movement, and selecting the most perfect phase of the movement.Equipment
This was taken with Canon 5DS, 24-70mm f/2.8L II lens, at 31mm, ƒ/7.1, 1/160s, ISO 200Inspiration
I wanted to capture ballerina's grace and the poise, in combination with the flow of the fabric, set in a dramatic lighting. This little passage expresses in words what I was trying to capture in this photo: "As she moves through her positions, she builds up the momentum of grace. Her movement and poise are as one. The ultimate crescendo of movement is her ability to hold herself in a position of calm, strength and poise, filled with potential energy, ready to be released into a creative explosion of a beautiful dance."Editing
yes, the background was cleaned up and dramatized. In my camera bag
Canon 5DS 24-70mm f/2.8L II 85mm 1.2L II (my all time favorite lens)Feedback
Split lighting works best for this type of shot - 2 strip boxes at 9 and 3 o'clock use a smoke machine highlight the smoke from the back use light, flowing fabric, like chiffon use fast strobes to capture every phase of the movement, allowing you to select the best possible moment
