Location
This was taken in zhouzhuang a water town about 1 hour from Shanghai, China. On a day out with only a small compact camera (wishing I had my DSLR). I'm a self taught amateur with a love for black and whiteTime
I would normally prefer early or late afternoon, however this was an overcast day so I caught the best shots I could with the time I had. This would have been at around 2pmLighting
I was concerned about the background, even though it was overcast it could have been too bright, I didn't want the walkers to be silhouettes, so I did have to play with the settings somewhat which wasn't easy on a compactEquipment
Compact Camera with no flash, no tripod, I did take it out of auto and manually adjusted the settings.Inspiration
I had been waiting a while for a group of locals to cross but they were never more than one or two, a group of tourists eventually came across and it was the perfect shot, well for me it was.Editing
I converted from colour to black and white using Photoshop, no other editsIn my camera bag
Since this trip I pretty much always take my DSLR, it's even in my car every day to work, you just never know when the next opportunity could arise. In my bag is a D610, a basic 200 zoom, a Nikon 5mm prime 1.4 , a Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8 D ED AF-S IF, a Tamron AF 28-75mm F2.8. I also carry a Gopro Hero4 (black) back up batteries, lens cleaners and tripodFeedback
I would have loved to have had more time, I would have also preferred to be early morning or later afternoon, however find a spot where you have plenty of traffic (if you want bodies in the shot). I find it adds depth to the photo. Be prepared to stay in the same spot for a while, could even be as much as 1 hour, take multiple shots and play with your setup to capture a variety of looks. Enjoy yourself
