Location
This photo was taken of my yearling colt and senior gelding. I took it out in my pasture in Eastern Idaho. I am self taught through on-line classes as well as networking with other local photographers that photograph our region including Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. I have found the professional photographers most helpful and willing to offer advice to advance my skill.Time
I was strolling my pasture in the early evening, armed with my camera in the event my horses offered a photo opportunity. From across the pasture I spotted the playful challenge of this colt toward his senior herd mate.Lighting
They were off to the east of me allowing me to take advantage of the very nice evening light yet ample light to capture moving animals.Equipment
I used a Nikon D7100 with an AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm lens at f/2.8.Inspiration
Horsemanship and the study of horses is my passion. I often observe my horses natural interactions and characteristics to improve my partnership with them. The trick is to not interfere with their activities by being present.Editing
I did a little post processing to this picture to boost the image and give it a hint of animated quality that I thought would enhance the quirky look on my colts face.In my camera bag
I always carry my Nikon D7100 and three versatile lenses: the Nikkor 70-200mm, Nikkor 18-140mm, and Nikkor 200-500mm. These three lenses cover my current interests from landscape to animals.Feedback
To achieve a natural shot with my domestic animals, I often choose a longer focal length lense. Friendly, curious animals require a lot of patience. I allow them to greet and check me out before I settle out of the way. Once their curiosity wears off, I can capture a more natural shot.
