Behind The Lens

Location

This was one of the last photos taken in a Newborn shoot for a wonderful family. Baby wasn't having being posed and really wanted to be held. So we headed to the window and let mom cuddle the baby.

Time

I usually shoot Newborns at 9am, so this would have been about 11am.

Lighting

This particular shot was lit by a large bare east facing window to camera right. It wasn't a sunny day either as I recall. It was over cast, so the light was bright but not harsh.

Equipment

This was shot with my 5D classic, a Canon 50mm 1.8 Mk1

Inspiration

I wanted to show the connection between mom and baby. We carry them for 9 months, and often hold our bellies in a similar way. It also allowed mom to hold baby since she was fussing when put down

Editing

I did. While not a lot. This image was taken in color initially. There was some clutter on either side of mom that I removed to avoid distractions, and then gave it a matte style Black and While Edit. I felt this softened it and allowed the emotional connection to be the focus.

In my camera bag

I now use a 6D camera. with my 5D as a back up. The lens that is usually on my camera more often than not is my Sigma 70-200 1.8. I love that lens. Otherwise I have my Canon 85mm 1.8. For Newborn sessions I use my Canon 50 1.8 Mk1 or my Younguno 35mm 2.8

Feedback

This is an easy shot. Have mom hold baby with a window to the side at about a 45 degree angle. Focus on baby's eyes keep the f.stop low so the depth of field is shallow and shoot. Depending on the strength of the light your ISO and shutter speed will need to be adjusted, for this image it was 1000/s ss and 400 ISO Try and keep whatever is behind them either dark or far enough back that there is less distractions and the focus really is the connection between the baby and mom.
