Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Mapleton, Utah. We were at a friend's wedding not too far from the wedding venue. I had noticed it while driving in. We stayed all weekend and there was an evening where there was a break in the action. The sky was looking like it was going to be perfect and I snuck away. It didn't take long and I was getting amazing shots. This one took the cake though.

Time

I love, love the golden hour. This was taken at sunset.

Lighting

One of my favorite lighting setups is back lighting. When I can combine that with the golden hour it is hard not to take a good shot.

Equipment

I used my wonderful Canon 5D MKII. I had on my Tamron 17-35 mm lens, not the sharpest but does the job.

Inspiration

I love old barns and to see this one while traveling was a gold mine. I knew once I saw it that if I had the chance I would take it to get some shots. I also knew that since you could see through the barn that I wanted to take advantage of that and combine it with wonderful lighting.

Editing

I took three exposures per set up and merged them into an HDR. I just love how the contrast and colors pop.

In my camera bag

My go to camera is my Canon 5D MKII and I usually have my Sigma 70-200 mm lens glued to it. But when I need the wide angles I'll put on my Tamron 17-35mm. But then when I need the close up I bring out my trusty work horse Canon 100mm macro lens.

Feedback

I always keep my eye out for interesting subjects along the road, while still paying attention to the road if driving. I was forturnate that this location was so close to my destination. I try and imagine what lighting would benefit the shot the most. Timing can be a deal breaker. If you don't time it right the lighting may be way off from what you imagined it in your head. So take your time and plan it out the best you can. Be creative with your angles. Try something out of the box. It may or may not work but at least you tryed. Have fun and be happy with your work no matter what.
