Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my backyard. He stopped to rest on the fence after dropping by the birdfeeder.

Time

I often like to keep an eye on the birdfeeder if it's full to see what shows up. I saw this cardinal out the window and tried to sneak out the back door without scaring him, but he saw me and flew to the fence where I was able to get some good shots before he flew away. This was on 2/16/15 at about 4 am.

Lighting

It was a slightly overcast day, leaving even lighting.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon Rebel T3 and a 75-300mm lens.

Inspiration

I love taking nature photography, especially of animals and I just happened to notice him outside and went for it.

Editing

I didn't really do any post-processing on this image besides cropping to get in closer to my subject.

In my camera bag

I carry my canon rebel T3 and an 18-55mm lens which is great for close-up pictures or portraits and a 75-300mm lens which I use for animal pictures or anything at a distance I want to focus better on. I also have a macro attachment with a removable .43X 55mm wide angle lens attachment for my18-55mm lens that I occasionally use to do macros of flowers, bugs, etc. I also like to keep a few extra SD cards, battery charger and a lens cloth, just in case.

Feedback

To get good bird photos I recommend a birdfeeder because they greatly increase your chances of seeing birds and bringing them closer to you. A telephoto lens in also really helpful because you don't have to get as close, and so are less likely to scare them away. Be quiet and patient, and with some luck you can get some great pictures.
