Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken on my back deck. I was potty training my twins and they were learning by peeing off our deck.

Time

This photo was shot in the afternoon. The sun was starting its decent but still high in the sky. You can see the shadows on the deck planks under them. It was not my favorite time of day to shoot but I have learned with my boys sometimes I can't wait for the best lighting to get shots. I have to be prepared when life just happens - and use photoshop in post processing if needed.

Lighting

The lighting was not the best when this image was taken. I love contrast. So when I got the shot, I decided in post processing to turn it into BW and really pull out the white to give it more contrast.

Equipment

This image was captured with a Nikon D200 using a Nikkor 50mm 1.8 lens. My husband was in school at the time and I did not have a ton of money to spend on lenses. For my first 5 years shooting digital, this was my primary equipment. However I really loved this lens because I was able to really learn lighting and composition.

Inspiration

The daily life I lead with my boys inspired me to capture this image and most of what I shoot. Im blessed with three rowdy boys - two of which are identical twins. We are an intense household. Life is most often full speed ahead. However, because life does fly by so fast, I don't want to forget where we have come from - it explains how we got to where we are today :-) So I try not to use my phone but my Nikon D800 is always charged and sitting on my desk waiting for my boys to be boys and grab that shot that will allow me to remember them for who God made them to be in this season of life. This photo pf them peeing off the deck at our home in Grand Blanc, Michigan is a favorite! It hangs in our guest bath now in our home in Greenville, SC. I can not tell you how many people leave that bathroom chuckling to themselves over this image! I remember dreading the potty training but thanks to this deck, it ended up being a breeze!

Editing

This image was post processed using Lightroom and a BW filter. I brought out the whites and darkened the black to give it more pop and contrast. The image was cropped so that deck portions to the right and lift in the image were removed and so that the eye was focused primarily on the twins and their cute little bums. The twins were in a stage of fighting each other so in the non edited image, they had bight marks all over their backs. These bite marks too away from the idea of the image so I removed them.

In my camera bag

For years, the camera equipment I used was a Nikon D200 and a 50mm 1.8 lens. Next I progressed to the Nikon D300s and now Im shooting with the Nikon D800. I love capturing color and contrast so a lens I have fallen in love with to get an exaggerated fun picture of my boys living life is the AF-S Nikkor 17-35mm 2.8D. However I always have my 50mm but it is now 1.4D and I LOVE my Nikkor 85mm 1.8 for portraits!

Feedback

Don't wait for perfect lighting/timing to try and get THAT image of your kids. Learn to use all lighting situations to push yourself as a photographer and often the "imperfect" image turns out to be the perfect one! My best and favorite ones of my kids are simply when they are just living life and I just shoot a set of them playing - almost every time I get one of those shots that melts my heart and makes me want to shoot more :-)
