Mama said we had to come in for supper just about the time the sun began to quickly head for the horizon. I'd already smelled cornbread and knew she'd taken a chicken from the smokehouse. The mosquitos were so big, it seemed we almost needed some kind of metal weapon to ward them away. We'd played hard, and sweated harder in the heat of an Indian summer day in Mississippi. Now we'd have a supper to remember, just like we did everyday. It was just another summer day. Or was it?
