Location
I shot this photo on the streets of Tel-Aviv, It was for day 236 of my "366 Days Of Photography" project I did between 2012-2013 which was the year I first picked up a camera. I am a self taught photographer and doing that project, forcing myself to pick up a camera everyday for a whole year has helped me learn photography. I believe you can learn to do anything, just do it everyday.Time
August 23, 2012 a bit after sunset, though I had this frame in my head a month before it was taken. I posted a photo of the wall and asked if anyone is interested in helping me get this shot I had in mind. Dan replied, and a few days later we were there, he was going back and forth on the street, flipping again and again because I kept telling him "Go again." Finally we said "Ok, last shot." and click, my eyes couldn't leave the LCD screen, I was so excited that a vision I had in my head for a month came to life.Lighting
It was when I started learning about flashes, so I had only 1 speedlite and I was always looking for creative ways of using only 1 flash. I have a BTS photo if you want me to send it in!Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 7D, 50mm f1.8, Youngnuo 560II flash and Youngnuo rf-603 triggers.Inspiration
I used to hang out at my friends skate shop which was on the other side of the road, just in front of the wall. One day when I stepped out of the shop I looked at the wall and asked my friends "Was that red wall always there...?" They laughed and said "Yeah dude.." I stared at it for a few seconds and decided I'll shoot a photo on that wall. I even remember telling myself that it's going to be my favourite shot (which it still is!). The purpose of the shadow was to show how big the red wall was and keeping the abstract style in the photo, as well as creating a different image of skateboarding that will be understandable also by non skaters.Editing
Minor adjustments, a lot of contrast and making the red stronger to make the wall pop.In my camera bag
My bag looks a lot different today, its been 4 years! I now shoot with a 5D Mark II, Sigma 15mm fisheye f2.8, Canon 17-40mm f4, Sigma 35mm f1.4, Canon 50mm f1.8, 2 Yongnuo Flashes and 1 Canon 430ex II Flash.Feedback
Be aware of your surroundings, always keep your eyes open for interesting backgrounds, they're a big part of a great photograph. Also, and this I say to every photographer who's new in the photography world... Don't think about your next piece of equipment, think about your next image. Thank you very much for choosing this photograph, it's been 4 years since I shot it and its a great feeling to see it still getting recognised and viewed by new people around the world, I hope it will inspire many more photographers to come.
