This photo was taken in Southern California's best kept secret: Palos Verdes.Time
This was taken June 21, 2014 around 3pm (at f/3.5 aperture and 1/1600 shutter speed). I would never suggest shooting around noon; photographing closer to sunrise and sunset will procure the best results. My favorite time to shoot is at what I call "golden hour" which is about an hour or so before sunset - it gives the best back lighting and warm tones for your photos.Lighting
I always shoot with the sun behind my subject. While shooting with sun on their face illuminates them, it creates harsh shadows and the subject will have a hard time opening their eyes. If this photo was taken a few hours later, although the sun would have been more behind her (giving her ample back lighting), it would have also been in the frame which would overexpose the photo.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 7D with a 24-70mm f/2.8L lens on a tripod.Inspiration
This was one of the projects I learned in my high school photo classes. I decided to revisit it when I came home from college for summer and use my sister as the model. I conjure a lot of my inspiration from Tumblr blogs and photographers I follow on Facebook.Editing
This picture requires (at least) two photos taken on a tripod: one of just the background and one of the subject and the background. Why? Because she is actually balancing on a bench I brought. When you edit them, you add the subject photo on top of the background photo and begin erasing the chair. Then, to create a more realistic shadow, you can use Liquify or the Clone Stamp tool. Those are all of the major edits. Otherwise, adjusting the curves, color balance, and exposure are all personal tastes. In my camera bag
Currently, all I am using to shoot are my Canon 7D and 24-70mm f/2.8L lens. I own three other Canon cameras (Canon T1i, G12, and AE-1) but my 7D is my favorite. I am currently about to switch to a 5D Mark III because I have had my 7D for 3 years and I'm ready to start shooting in full frame! Otherwise, I have a tripod with a remote, an external flash, a light diffuser and reflectors.Feedback
Having talented models who have the strength and balance to hold themselves on whatever object you place them on (chair, bench, ladder, etc.) as well as a positive, patient attitude will be the most helpful if you are inspired to try a levitation photo. The best part about this genre of photography is your personal creativity that you add to the photo. Think outside the box and seek locations that others may not think to use!
