Behind The Lens

Location

The photo is set in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, particularly along the Fraser River watershed (also known as the Fraser Valley) This fertile area gives growth to some of the most pristine tulip fields in all of Canada. Nestled in the North Cascades in the Cheam Mountain Range the area provides a sense of stepping back to a time without the hustle and bustle of the city life. The area being so close to Harrison Hot Springs and several other natural hot springs provides the area with short hikes with lots of therapeutic value.

Time

I had to be ready to go as soon as the fields were open to the public. If you wait too long the area becomes very busy with large bus tours from Vancouver. This shot allowed me to get in before the crowds and really frame the shot. I wanted to allow the lines of the rows to meet up with the mountains behind the foreground. Some light rain had dotted the petals earlier in the day and the clouds were just on their way out. A light breeze and a beautiful sense of fragrance was in the air.

Lighting

I waited to get a handle on the morning sun to become a little dull from the incoming rain clouds. I used a low ISO, but not low enough for the clouds to become blurred at all.

Equipment

This shot was captured with the Nikon D800, Nikkor 16-35 mm F4 @ 16mm, @ F8, ISO 100, GND Filter used.

Inspiration

My inspiration for this shot was easy. Beautiful fields of multi colored tulips with a mountain backdrop. Where can you go to see that?!! I really wanted to be able to capture the contrast of the color onto the majesty of the mountains. Providing a feel that the area is vast, colorful and nestled right in between some of the most beautiful mountains in the Pacific North West.

Editing

Some contrast and vibrancy were used in Adobe Photoshop, other than that it's straight from the raw file.

In my camera bag

In my bag I normally have a Nikon D800 body, Nikon D7100 body, Nikkor 16-35mm F4 VR, Nikkor 24-70mm F2.8, Nikkor 80-200mm 2.8, Nikkor 135mm F2, and a Tokina 100mm 2.8 macro.

Feedback

If I am to provide advice to photographers looking to shoot a popular photo spot. Try to think outside of the rule of thirds. I mean it is still important to take the shot that technically provides the user's eye to follow, but when you've seen one shot of a popular spot we tend to just keep on scrolling by. Try some angles that you think may not be textbook. User's will say ... "hey isn't that Palouse Falls, or the Grand Canyon ... but it looks different ... " That is when you've achieved something unique.
