It was the '60's; a decade of change, slowly at first and then faster and faster toward the end, so much so that the term, 'Decade of radical change' was the moniker. As for the changes in autos, the outlandish tailfins of the '50's had gotten as large as could be, and partly because of the popularity of the finrless VW Beetle, the fins were becoming smaller each year and now. in 1963, this Mercury Comet was sleek and tasteful, sporty and cool. I don't know whether the mud protectors over the rear wheels could have been purchased for a premium back then or whether they were added later if and when this car was restored.
This was seen in the Castro one day while I was waiting to change buses and this car was waiting for the red light to change. The world is still changing and radically not for the better.
