About every 18 months, the moon, sun and Earth are perfectly aligned and the moon casts a shadow over Earth.  A total solar eclipse is when the moon, the sun and the Earth all line up such that the moon completely blocks out the sun to viewers on part of Earth's surface.

NASA estimated more than 300 million people in the United States viewed directly view the total solar eclipse which swept across portions of Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.
