Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Texas during one of our storm chasing tours, I believe during our storm photography tour actually due to the high probability of seeing LP (low precipitation) supercells like this one shown. LP storms make for great photos because you can see the storm cloud structure without it being obscured by rain!

Time

Supercell storms generally take place in early to late evening in the Great Plains. So I believe this was taken around 6-7 pm.

Lighting

Mother Nature provided the lighting on this one!

Equipment

This photo was taken with a Canon 5D mark III with a 35 mm lens. No tripod as the storm was moving too fast to keep setting up a tripod. With storms, you get used to having to take quick photos and moving to follow the storm. It can be quite a challenge!

Inspiration

Since me and my husband own and run a storm chasing company, storms and nature are our passion and we love being able to share the experience safely with others. That said, we also love taking photos of the storms to share with those who can’t join us in person. I personally love capturing storm structure in a picturesque setting over any other kind of photos. I thought this photo of the storm with our storm chasing vehicle in the forefront would make for a good image!

Editing

Just a little bit of cropping and adjusting the white balance on this one.

In my camera bag

In my bag I normally have 2-3 different cameras. Always good to have a backup. As usual, extra batteries as well. A zoom lens, wide angle lens and a macro lens as well (I also love macro photography). I keep a go pro camera on hand as well and tripod and remote shutter for lightning photography.

Feedback

Join us on a tour! But, if you can’t, get out there when you know there is a storm coming (safely of course). And have your camera and lens ready to go. Storms move and change fast!
