Location
Hecet Head Beach at Devil’s Elbow State Park on Coast Highway 1 just 12 miles north of Florence Oregon. This is my recharge place to go when life gets so heavy I need a alone zone to think and regroup.Time
This shot was taken around 6:37 pm in mid-August 2018, as the sun was setting behind a mild fog bank that was lurking out over the water.Lighting
I couldn’t have asked for better lighting ~ the combination of the setting sun during the golden hour being filtered and diffused through the creeping fog was everything I needed.Equipment
Shot on an iPhone 6, just my hands for stability and my knees sunk in the sand.Inspiration
This was an extremely tumultuous and emotionally exhaustive time in my life. I felt emotionally drained ~ as I stood at water’s edge trying to empty my mind and inhale some sense of calm from the cry of the seagulls, the rush of the tidewater, the roar of the waves crashing against the cliffs and the blasting frigid air buffering me from all sides, I wanted to convey the sense of desolation I was feeling inside.Editing
I did some cropping to bring the image in closer as well as adjusted the shadowing to heighten the reflections in the tide pools and on the sand. I used no filters ~ none needed. In my camera bag
My iPhone (currently have an iPhone 10) is always in my hand or pocket ~ I love the light weight and portability of a pocket device, and I’ve been able to capture some really great images. I’ve recently purchased a Nikon z50 16-50mm that I look forward to exploring.Feedback
The Oregon coast is raw ~ it’s not tame or real warm like tropical coastlines so dress layered. And don’t forget a hair tie to restrain your hair ~ right above this beach and several others along the coastlines of Oregon, Washington and Northern California is a series of lighthouses strategically placed in areas of much wind and sea turbulence. You’ll feel those forces immediately upon exiting your vehicle.
