Location
This photo was taken on-location with all natural light in a 600-acre farmland turned wooded park, gifted to the city of Dallas upon the owner’s passing. The reason was simply so others could enjoy it. I love shooting here and remembering the gift he generously gave to the public.Time
Strangely the weather in the midst of December here has been more than fair. A wonderful breeze and slight chill filled the air nearing golden hour. This shot was taken near 3:30pm.Lighting
We hadn’t quite entered the golden hour, yet the setting was still bright and beautiful. By using backlighting, we extended our small time frame of “good lighting” by a mile.Equipment
Canon 6D, with the simplest of lenses... 50mm 1.8. No other equipment/modifiers were used.Inspiration
This model, while still a child, is absolutely stunning. I felt backlighting her would draw attention to her soft but striking features and accentuate the natural beauty of her face.Editing
I used the Painterly II action set made by Greater Than Gatsby on this image. While I usually hand edit much more, I felt like using this wonderful toning collection would preserve the enjoyment of editing this session, and I was right. Effortless and consistent. In my camera bag
I’m most likely the simplest shooter there can be. I find such an exciting challenge of using the same few items, forcing me to stay resourceful and creative when photographing portraits. I carry my Canon 6D, 50mm, and some version of backup set almost exclusively. Always extra cards and camera batteries. I also have things handy for portraits, such as bobby pins, pore-blurring face powder, tape, clamps, hair ties, and simple fairy lights!Feedback
Play. Try new things. Trust your models. Connect with them. Enjoy the experience of every soul you capture through your lens. That is far more important than any technical advice I could give.
