Behind The Lens

Location

I'm a photography student. I took this picture at The Silo in Cape Town at the V & A Waterfront. Just to practice the craft and put to work what I've learned so far.

Time

I took two of my friends to the V & A Waterfront in Cape Town. I used them as practice props. We went about after midday on a summers day. That was the only time they could go and meet with me. We've planned this for three weeks already and could only do it on that day when the sun was at its harshest.

Lighting

They've taught us at the college that harsh light is difficult to work with especially in Cape Town in summer at midday. So I used the statue the subject is sitting on to cover him under the light. That prohibited the sun to give that harsh light on the subject and bleaching out parts of the image.

Equipment

I used the Canon 77D with the 18-55 mm kit lens.

Inspiration

Just exploration. I follow all these amazing photographers on Instagram. As I moved through the spaces and we look at pictures and similarities. Just tried to work from what we saw and implement similar styles and posing.

Editing

Yes, I was still new to Lightroom. So I regularly fall guilty of over adjusting and post-processing. With portraits you can't do too much editing otherwise you change the subject from its natural tones. I worked with the basics, exposure, contrast, saturation and vibrance. But my favorite was dehazing.

In my camera bag

Because equipment is so expensive in my country. I only travel with my Camera 77D. My Manfrotto Tripod. My 18-55 mm kit lens. If lenses are available from the college I attend. I usually book the Canon EF 75-300mm f4.0-5.6 III USM.

Feedback

Do not try too hard. If you go without a plan which I don't recommend. Look at images that you want similar outcomes with what you want to capture as you go along. Work with people that you are comfortable with and are comfortable with you. Someone that is vocal. Consider carefully what you put in the frame and what you leave out. Talk with the person you photographing on how they feel comfortable on posing. Most importantly have fun.
