Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on a fall day in October at the bottom of Multnomah Falls. It was actually raining a bit so I had to take this shot under an umbrella. I've only ever visited the falls in the summer time and this blew me away. The fall colors took my breath away.

Time

Me and some friends drove from Boise, Idaho to Portland for a wedding and stopped here on the way. It was around 3 PM that this shot was taken. Only a few more hours and the light would have already been setting for the evening.

Lighting

Raining/cloudy days are the best days for photographs. The sun is trapped and the light is even. There are no harsh sun rays like you would get on a sunny day in summer. Always bring your camera, and your umbrella of course, during these days because you never know when the perfect picture can be taken.

Equipment

For this picture I used a Canon T5i with a wide angle lens and a polarizing filter to give it the pop of color.

Inspiration

We were planning on visiting the falls and I had hoped that the fall colors would be amazing, and it didn't disappoint. I did get up on some stairs nearby to get above all the tourist heads and not get them in my shot. The bridge is a must when you take a picture here so I really focused on getting that in the middle of the photograph.

Editing

I did upload and edit this in Lightroom. The only editing I touched on was the color. The colors were more yellow and I turned it more orange. The orange just made it so much more dramatic than the soft yellow it originally had.

In my camera bag

I always bring with me a zoom lens. I normally keep a wide angel lens on my camera to avoid any distortions. For this, I just stuck with the wide angel lens.

Feedback

Move around! Try to get on different levels or photograph different angles. Sometimes it's hard to tell what will really come out until you look at the collection of pictures you have altogether. I also suggest bringing different kinds of filters or lens options so you can change them out depending on what your objective is.
