Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was shot on our 3 acre property in the Mid-north Coast of NSW Australia. Our place is very beautiful, on a ridge overlooking mountains and trees with lots of bird varieties.

Time

The photo was taken around midday which is not traditionally the best time for bird photos.

Lighting

The lighting was flat as the day was quite cloudy and the bird was perching on a tomato stake with a uniform background of a shed wall behind it. The situation meant that shadows were almost entirely eliminated.

Equipment

Nikon D600, AF/S Nikkor 200-500mm VR ED lens. Handheld, no flash.

Inspiration

I am a passionate bird photographer and I am always on the lookout for birds on our property and further afield in the area I live in.

Editing

Given the nature of the subject and background I wanted this photo to have an "arty" feel so after cropping, I wound down the exposure across the image and then used the dodge and sponge tools in Photoshop to brighten and increase saturation of the bird itself.

In my camera bag

For bird photography I carry a Nikon D500 paired with Nikkor 200-500 lens. I have a couple of shorter kit lenses for wider angle work as well as a Nikkor 105mm macro lens for closeup detail. I usually shoot handheld or with a monopod. I rarely use tripods.

Feedback

For bird photography you need to be very observant and very patient. Always carry a camera with you, you never know when that shot will present itself. Manual shutter and aperture with capped auto ISO and back button, single point, continuous focusing works best for me. Half the job is done in-camera, the rest in post.
