Location
This is the entrance to the Hotel Chopin, which is located within the passage Jouffroy, a 19th century precursor of the indoor shopping mall.Time
A typical gray Parisian afternoon.Lighting
Indoors under skylight.Equipment
Shot on 35mm black and white film with a Nikon FE2.Inspiration
This photo is meant as an homage to the early 20th century Parisian photographer Eugene Atget. Over the decades of his extensive and obsessive photographic exploration of the city, Atget had no interest in its grand monuments or glorious vistas. Rather, he wandered through the older, downtrodden districts, where he tended to fix his gaze on details that evoked with a heavy dose of nostalgia an earlier era that seemed to be vanishing before his very eyes.Editing
The original darkroom print was scanned and then processed digitally to render the contrast, tone and blur that may be associated with the antiquated 19th century equipment used by Atget. In my camera bag
Pentax K5, and some lenses.Feedback
Visit the Hotel Chopin, which is still there (since 1846).
