Location
I took this photo on a fall trip to the North Shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota. The image is of the Split Rock Lighthouse. It is one of the most photographed things in Minnesota.Time
This photo was taken at sunset. There were clouds to add to the sky, but unfortunately the sunset did not shine.Lighting
The lighting was okay. I wish the sunset would have been more spectacular.Equipment
I used my Cannon 6d mark ii with a EF24-105mm f/4L IS II USM lens with a polarizer. I needed to get so low ( to get the reflection in the puddle ) that I was not able to use a tripod. I placed my camera on the ground with a rock under the lens to get it in the right spot. This is where the articulating screen game in very handy to position the camera.Inspiration
As this is one of the most photographed sites in Minnesota, I wanted to get my own unique perspective. It would be very hard to get a reflection photo on Lake Superior with its waves. So I found some puddles on the rocks on the shore and used that for my reflection photo.Editing
I did some generalized post processing in Lightroom. In my camera bag
I normally carry my Cannon 6d Mark ii. I love that articulating screen. I am a landscape photographer, so I always have my Cannon 16-35mm f/4 lens and my Cannon 24-105mm f/4 lens. I have a polarizer, neutral density and grad neutral density filters. I carry these even though I know I can do it in post if needed. I also carry extra batteries, SD cards, lens cloths. etc. Attached to the bag I have my MeFoto tripod. I started photography using a tripod, so I shoot almost everything on a tripod. I just feel more comfortable with it.Feedback
You will need to be there when there are puddles in the rocks, so after a rain or big waves. Great clouds or more fall color would add more to the image. Just get out there and shoot. Split Rock Lighthouse is a great subject, so it is hard to go wrong with it.
