The photo was taken while visiting Stingray City, Grand Cayman. We have been going to Grand Cayman for the past couple of years during Pirate Week in November. If you haven’t been I highly recommend it.Time
This was a mid morning trip out to Stingray City. If you’ve been there you know how crowded it can get. I spent most of the trip laying on the sandy bottom in 3 feet of water looking for this particular shoot.Lighting
In this image on nature light was used. It was bright sunny morning, the water was shallow, and the sand reflect the light making it almost perfect. It was also a windy day and the water was choppy which didn’t provide the beautiful sun rays I was hoping for, but I’m still happy with the results.Equipment
For this particular shot I used a Canon EOS 80D with Tokina 10-17mm fisheye lens inside a Nauticam underwater housing. The wide-angle lens allowed me to get close to the subject and still get the subject and scenery in the shot.Inspiration
I went on this trip to specifically take pictures of the stingrays. I had visited in the past so I knew in my mind’s eye what I was looking for and was lucky enough to capture 90% of the image I had envisionedEditing
The photo looked ok on color but I thought black and white would add some drama to it. I also adjusted the depth of the black and white colors to add additional contrast. In my camera bag
Must of my photography is underwater so my gear mostly reflects what I’d use while diving. I shoot with a Canon EOS 80D and I have several lenses - for Macro I carry the Canon 60mm and 100mm lenses. For wide-angle I use the Tokina 10-17mm fisheye or the Canon 10-22mm lens. I also carry the standard Canon 18-55mm and 50mm for portraits. Then there’s the UW equipment Nauticam housing, (2) Inon 2000-S strobes, and various zoom/focus gears, different length arms for the strobes, and adapters to connect the armsFeedback
The main advise for getting a shot like this or any wildlife photo is be patient and plan ahead. Try to learn as much as you can about your subject beforehand so you can anticipate their behavior and surroundings to setup that perfect shot. Oh and for this one holding your breath is a pretty good idea.
