Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Lake Clark National Reserve in Alaska. You fly into Anchorage and take a small plane to the lodge.

Time

This shot was taken in daylight hours. It rained everyday, but we had our rain gear for ourselves and our cameras. This was my first trip to Alaska and my first trip seeing bears. What a magical experience it was. It was in September at the end of the season and the silver salmon were running. The bears didn't mind us observing them doing their daily routine. Mama bears would go back and forth with their cubs from the meadow to the water, stopping at times for a nap or to let their cubs nurse. It was such a thrill to watch them catch the fish. I was taking pictures of this bear chasing after the salmon parallel to me and after it caught the fish it turned and came my direction. I couldn't believe my eyes as I kept clicking away capturing the moment.

Lighting

The lighting was under mostly cloudy skies.

Equipment

I was using my Canon 1DX mark II with my 400mm DO II lens on a tripod.

Inspiration

I wanted to get images of the bears fishing, so I would take photos of every attempt they made. They didn't always succeed, but patience always pays off.

Editing

I use PhotoShop and Lightroom to process my images.

In my camera bag

Since I'm a wildlife photographer I mostly use my 400mm DO II lens, but in some situations I use my 100-400mm II lens. I have two cameras, the 1DX Mark II and the 5Dmark IV. If things are too far away, I'll opt for the 5DMarkII because it has more megapixels since I usually need to crop my images because the wildlife can be quite far away.

Feedback

For anyone that wants to get images of bears fishing, I would highly recommend going to Alaska on a photo tour. I went with Nathaniel Smalley. It's a workshop photo tour, and he does a wonderful job, plus you will have a bear guide.
