I took this photo in Gastown in Vancouver BC. There are so many wonderful spots to shoot in Vancouver but this is by far one of the best places to go. The iconic steam clock in Vancouvers Gastown is a favourite stop for tourists.Time
Walking around Vancouver at night after the tourists have gone home is my favourite time to shoot. The empty cold looking streets give warmth to the couple in the reastaurant. The cool night also helped add a little more drama to the steam clock.Lighting
I really wanted to capture the mood of the moment without over exposing the shot. Ensuring I kept the string lights and lamp post clear in the shot was an important part of the overal mood of this scene.Equipment
I used my Canon 60d with Tripod.Inspiration
This shot actually happend by chance. I was focused on the steam clock but when I took a look from that angle I was instantly taken by the contrast of the inviting warmth of the reastaurant and the cold empty street. I shot in RAW colour but had B&W in my mind frome the begining.Editing
I shot in Raw but did not require too much post processing on this one. I converted it to black and white and adjusted contrast, sharpnes and clarity. It was actually refreshing to have a shot that did not require a ton of post processing time.In my camera bag
Well at the moment I have a Canon 6d with 24-105 f.4. I always have a tripod with me and a remote shutter release. I always ensure I have a flashlight and extra batteries. That is about it a prettysimple yet effective kit. More lenses to be added soon.Feedback
I have found that I have taken some of my best photos when I stop and look around. With, this shot I was focused on the steam clock and circling it like I was going in for the kill. But then I stopped and looked around a bit and found a unique way to capture the steamclock but also incorporate other elements resulting in a better overall story...well I think so anyway.
