Very similar to Tasmania's Native hen and possibly un -edible. People here say cook it with a rock, when done throw out the bird and eat the rock? Not my place at all. Eat home grown vegies till the urge for fish $ chips + salt gets you.

This bird is commonly called a pukeko in New Zealand. they are also called a swamp hen they are edible but not that tasty from what i have been told.

Hello Mark thanks for your comments slowly braised I a clay pot they don’t taste to bad or the breast quickly pan fried with some tasty sauce makes it reasonable eating. Patrick ‘s comment re the Aussie birds is quite funny but rock would be definitely tougher to chew. :-)

This is an invasive species in South Florida known as the Purple Swamphen. There are two color varieties, this one and the gray headed variety.
