Behind The Lens

Location

The photograph was taken at Skógafoss waterfall in the south of Iceland on winter 2016.

Time

It was a typical winter afternoon. It was very cold and it rained, damaging the photograph. The fact that there were tourists in front of the waterfall was also a problem. After a long waiting period, I managed to make the long exposure, with the frame I wanted. I wanted something very evocative, an immersive image. I really liked the result.

Lighting

The winter light with cloudy sky became diffuse and contributes only as a background that allows to highlight the main reason of the photography. It was a typical photograph in which the composition and technique used can make the difference. The light did not enhance the photo but served as a pleasant background.

Equipment

Camera: Canon 5Ds/ Lens: Canon L 16-35mm 4.0/ ND Filter 1.2/ Tripod Carbon fiber Manfrotto

Inspiration

The wild beauty of Iceland inspires each new landscape along the way, but the immensity of this 60-meter-high waterfall paralyzes us in the face of so much force. The composition chosen for this shot suggests that the person who sees this image feels emerge in that atmosphere that I had the privilege of feeling very close.

Editing

I used Photoshop to remove water droplets on the lens and improve the contrast. In addition I worked more sharpness and cooled the color temperature to give a more cinematographic and dramatic aspect. A very simple edition.

In my camera bag

Cameras: Canon 5Ds to landscape/ Canon 7D Mark II to wildlife. Lens: Canon L 11-24mm/Canon L 16-35mm/ Canon L 24-105mm/ Canon L 24mm 1.4/ Canon L 100-400mm/ Canon Zeiss Planar 50mm 1.4. Tripod Mafrotto Carbon Fiber. ND and Polarize filters.

Feedback

For a photo like this or for any other landscape photography and wildlife, the photographer must to visit the site before to connect with the mood and atmosphere of the place. And above all, be patient and very observant. The nature suggests many compositions, it is necessary to train our eyes a lot.
