Behind The Lens

Location

The beach in Bandon, Oregon.

Time

9:50pm.

Lighting

The sun was down enough there wasn't much light. I decided to try a long exposure to get that long exposure effect with the water and to get some more light into the photo.

Equipment

Sony SLT-A55V, Sony DT 18mm-250mm lens, f/29, 120mm, tripod, 30 seconds, ISO 100, no flash.

Inspiration

It was our last night at the beach. All week we had total cloud cover, no good lighting for the type of photos I've seen taken here. I took my tripod out trying to find some good photo ops, but wasn't getting any luck. I was getting frustrated and decided I'd try a long exposure to get that silky water affect, and knowing the long exposure would let in more light. It was a last effort to try to get something good in this amazing place.

Editing

I edited it in Lightroom on my Windows laptop. I cropped the original first to get what I thought was the most interesting photo. Then I tried many things with nothing working - tried to warm it up, give it some purple color, brighten it up, make it darker, edit various parts, black & white instead of color, all kinds of things and nothing was working. Then I decided to play around and go crazy. I tried all kinds of wild and silly things when I came upon the purple color and loved it! Sometimes when nothing is working just go nuts and you might find something that does.

In my camera bag

Sony SLT-A55V, Sony DT 18mm-250mm, Sony 35mm prime, Sony 50mm prime, grey scale card, iPad, extra batteries, extra memory cards. Don't carry a flash unless I know I'm going to need it.

Feedback

Take a photo of something you like. Don't try to find something you THINK everyone else will like. If you do that you'll probably end up with something you don't like, will try to edit it but won't get something you like that much, and when you post it people won't like it that much because they can tell you didn't like it. Even if it's odd, different, not exactly what you think those big photogs would do, if you like it do it! Take the photo! Then when you edit it again do what you like. ALSO, when editing if nothing is working, try stuff. You liked it when you took it but now aren't getting anything you like in editing. I've often taken a photo that I thought looked great but in editing hated it. Then changed it to black and white and loved it! Or some split-tone/sepia tone stuff. Even if people say don't over-saturate, try it. Try taking the Clarity in Lightroom up to 100 - or down to -100. Just try all kinds of things. Sometimes you do take a photo you think will be great only to realize it isn't. Then again, could be it just simply isn't working the way you normally edit so try all kinds of things, you might find something you like! OH, and if you take long exposures on a tripod, turn OFF the image stability thing in your camera. It's great for hand held photos, but when you put it on a tripod where there won't be any shake, the image stabilization stuff in your camera will try to find shake and actually mess up your photo. Try it. Leave it on for 15-30 second exposure, then turn it off for the same exact photo and compare them on your computer. You'll quickly see the difference. Again, when you produce a photo you really like - even when you think it's something the photogs you follow wouldn't like - it WILL show in the end result and people WILL like it.
