Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Sabi Sands Game Reserve, South Africa, during a photo safari.

Time

It was one of the last photos taken on that day (17/03/2017). When we were on our way to the lodge, at 05.30 pm, we saw a group of three lionesses , one with cubs. They were very quiet and gave a good chance to take some nice photos.

Lighting

At that time , there was not natural light, and the lions were illuminated with a spotlight.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D800, and a Tamron 150-600 without flash. The 4x4 Toyota was equipped with a camera support system. Taken with 1/250, f/6.3, 380mm,ISO 2500

Inspiration

I was in a group of six photographers and we all were amazed with the scene. We couldn't waste that luck!

Editing

Some minor adjustments in Lightroom and conversion to B&W with Silver Efex Pro.

In my camera bag

I have been improving my equipment . Now I have a Nikon 850, a Nikon 300 pf f/4, a Nikon 500 pf f/5.6 and a Nikon 70-200 f/4. This my equipment for wildlife.

Feedback

For those who like wildlife, Africa is the best destination . I know Mozambique, Namibia,Tanzania and South Africa. I grew up in Mozambique and lived there until 1976 .Maybe that's why South Africa, I've visited many times, is my favorite destination. Sabi Sands for big cats is very good. In any case, it's important to know which animals you want to photograph, The big 5? You will need be equipped with tele lenses (200-600), to wake up early ( when animals are more active) and probably a good guide.
