Behind The Lens

Location

In the living room, where the cat was lounging on the black table in front of the couch.

Time

It was sometime in the mid-afternoon, and the cat was just lounging after having come back from outside. She was being so lazy and stretching around just on the edge of the rays of the sun coming in from the window, it was a great photo opportunity.

Lighting

The sun was coming in through the slanted roof windows and drawing a rectangle on the table. The cat, obviously, wanted to be in the sun, and was decidedly in the best possible lighting.

Equipment

My old Canon EOS 1100D with the 18-105mm EF-S lens. No tripod, no flash...

Inspiration

Just the sheer light contrast of the white and very dark cat on a black background called out to be framed.

Editing

Just black and white conversion from color, nothing else.

In my camera bag

I usually carry around a bag that contains 1 or 2 spare batteries, the charger, and an EF 70-200 f/4L lens, with UV and circularly polarized filters for both the 18-105 and 70-200 lenses. Both lenses have a 68mm diameter, so filters are interchangeable, but UV filter stays on nearly permanently.

Feedback

Find a place where the animal is comfortable, and also make sure you zoom in that you're not encroaching into the animal's space or light. Anything that may make it decide to change pose or leave. Ignore the animal while setting up - bring the camera to your face first, then aim at it, so it does not feel like there's any interest in it, but interest in the camera instead.
