Behind The Lens

Location

This image was captured at Stawell in Victoria. Australia with a young guy showing off his skills to a group of photographers. We were there for an interclub photographic championship. The day was windy and cold but no deterrent to either the rider or the group of Photographers. He went up and over and around so many times and many images were taken by the whole group. This one I thought showed his strength and the height he got to better than most others I had taken

Time

This was taken in the morning at around the 11am mark.

Lighting

Although the way was cold and windy, the day still had bright light when pointing the camera towards the sky. I didn't think is was necessary to get the feel of the weather, but rather to focus on the drama with the jump. Light from off the while bricks also was a concern in some ways, so the exposure needed to be correct to get the rider at his best.

Equipment

I use a Nikon D7000 for my photography and the lens used on this occasion was a 24.120ml Nikon lens There was no tripod used as the movement needed was constant because of the speed at which he was moving

Inspiration

As this was held as part of an interclub photographic group day, it was great fun to be with other photographers who were also sharpening their skills with speed photography. We also had the benefit of having a Pro Sports Photographer there to give us some advice as to how to get the best shot possible.Different positions while he was displaying his riding skills was a learning curve as well being aware of the other photographers and not being too much of a hindrance to what they were attempting at the same time

Editing

Altering the White balance to Daylight and use of curves and contrast all helped as it took it from being quite a dull murky background to more of what my eye really did see.

In my camera bag

This varies from time to time, but always there is my Nikon D7000, my Nikon 24.-120 ml lens. Most other times I also have a Sigma 12-24 wide angle lens and a Nikon 400ml lens, along with some filters [Grad neutral density] as well as the usual cleaning tools, brush, wipes, cloths etc Plus a remote Shutter release, a pen and pad, extra battery, tissues and a few coins in case of an emergency!

Feedback

Try and research or take a pro photographer with you to guide you on what settings you should be using once there. You will have very little time to work out what is required once the action begins, so fore knowledge is like being for armed to get the best out of the subject on the day.A fast lens also helps, but if you haven't got that [I haven't either] then raising your iso to pick up the speed is also and advantage.
