Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at my studio in the North East of the UK.

Time

The shot was taken one Saturday afternoon.

Lighting

I used a beauty dish with a grid to hone the light and give quite a quick fall off - positioned quite far to camera right so her body was defined.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D3S with 70 - 200 f2.8 lens with a focus length of 185mm - ISO 200, F/10, 1/125 sec

Inspiration

Laura has a natural 'edge' to her look and therefore I wanted to combine strength with (implied) nudity - I thought gloves added a bit of mystery; sort of "I'm nude but I'm keeping these gloves on"

Editing

The mono conversion was achieved using a Gradient Map with Photoshop - all my monos use this method; it's nice and contrasty without being too harsh or too soft - a nice mix. I added the 'flare' in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

I have three Nikon cameras; D3S, D800 and a D300 (just in case) with 50mm, 24-70mm, 90mm macro and 70-200mm lenses. I also use three Fujis: X-Pro1, X-E1 and XT30 bodies with various lenses.

Feedback

When you have a great subject-matter like Laura you can pretty much use anything to light her - I never really worry about the technical side (although I still use a flash meter) - nine times out of ten I use one light (usually a Bowens) - I never worry about the shot being technically right (although I do have Rembrandt lighting in this one) - there's too much snobbery and camera club mentally when it comes to picture critique - If you like your picture that's all that matters - although start with a great subject and you can't go far wrong.
