Behind The Lens

Location

At the Orange Hall in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It was built in 1903 and has the vintage look we were searching for.

Time

Early Morning

Lighting

I used two strobes with strip boxes and grids. The boxes were positioned half a foot in front of the subjects on either side but aiming directly across from each other. It helped to highlight the far sides of both subjects but then also fall off and spill and fall evenly onto the subjects partners face. The added bonus was that background was well lit in the centre, with a natural vignetting happening to the edges, because both lights were aimed more at the centre of the shot. This added more framing and really popped the image. Lighting them from the side also helped to cut down on any shadows that could have spilled onto the background from the subjects.

Equipment

Canon 5d mark iii, Canon 24-70mm f2.8 ii, 2 Elinchrom HD500 flash heads, 2 strip boxes with grids.

Inspiration

I wanted to create a series of images with the nostalgic fell of the old 1940's swinging sock hops.

Editing

Yes, I did some color correcting to give a more vintage film look and then also added scratches/damage to the edges with Alien Skins Exposure in photoshop. I wanted the image to feel like it was found in a box in someones attic.

In my camera bag

I always have my Canon 24-70mm f2.8L ii. I find that range really fits my eye and what I see best, I can capture the world as I see it, or peak in just a tiny bit to get a little intimate. But I love showing the full surroundings and using things like windows, curtains, ceilings etc to frame the shot. I've recently fallen back in love with my Canon 70-200mm f2.8L ii IS because it let's me be a little more voyeuristic... but damn that lens is HEAVY. The final lens I must keep in my bag at all times is my Canon 85mm f1.2L ii, it's an incredible lens, the 85mm focal range is one of my favourites to shoot at, and the 1.2 aperture allows me to shoot practically in the dark.

Feedback

If you have an idea, make it happen. We needed to find a location to do this shoot but we kept falling short on an early 1900's hall in our city. We almost ended up doing this in a location that was more 60's than 40's because a deadline was approaching and we couldn't find this specific venue. With a little help from the a Facebook community, were in touch with the lady who ran this hall and she let us in VERY early in the morning.... before a rental arrived for the day. The two dancers in the shot were a little more begrudging because of the early shoot, but once they saw what the back of the camera was showing, they got a really great kick of adrenaline and we created some breathtaking action shots.
