Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken at South Shields beach, just beyond the cliffs there is a rock beach with a small clifftop, I had them stand on this cliff.Time
It was taken around midday, had originally wanted to take it more towards the evening, however, due to timing logistics it was not possible.Lighting
The lighting of this picture was a nightmare, the midday sun was really harsh however it also gave a richness to the picture especially the clouds which is why I went with black-and-white.Equipment
I used a fifty millimetres lens along with a Sony A7 mark one.Inspiration
This was a spur of the moment idea, we were actually going home at the time but I noticed the rock beach and as the tide was out thought it would be fun to have them stand on the cliff edge with me stood below looking up at them. I really want to put them up on a pedestal because they had such powerful poses.Editing
I basically mirrored the image, hence the reflection, initially the image looked great but it just did not convey the feeling of them standing up high, I really wanted them on a pedestal, like two goddesses looking down at the world. In my camera bag
I tend to be very selective with equipment, I'll pick out a lens beforehand and stick with it. Most often I use a fifty millimetres lens for portraits, though I always carry a 35 to 70 millimetres lens just in case I need to vary the depth of field. I also always carry a reflector for outdoor shoots along with a stand just in case I don't have anyone to hold a reflector.Feedback
My best advice is if you wish to shoot a mirrored image which conveys the feeling of height, make sure you are shooting from below the subject you wish to be mirrored.
