Location
I clicked this photo at Delta Junction, Alaska. It is a far north part of Alaska, around 100 miles north of Fairbanks.Time
Around 5 pm on a cold winter day, just 30 mins before sunset. So it was a golden hour but even golden hour is dominated by cold blue that far up north.Lighting
Lighting was not that great. Whole landscape was dominated by chilling cold created by subzero temperatures. But the best part was to see the reflection of setting sun on a truck. In my opinion that highlighted the truck making photo successful.Equipment
Camera: Nikon D810 Lens: Nikon 10.5mm f/2.8G AF DX Fisheye Lens It was shot handheld as in 15 degree below zero, I did not have luxury to setup a tripod and take photo at leisure.Inspiration
In the open vast landscape of far north of Alaska, where there is this road and wilderness on the both sides for hundreds and thousands of miles. The road from Fairbanks to Turtle bay is a engineering marvel, and so as the Trans Alaksa pipeline. It kinda symbolizes man's victory over the nature! But still the human presence here is so sparse and scare of getting caught in extreme weather is more bone chilling then the subzero temperatures. Thinking from other side - human invasion in this open and vast wilderness has created and still continues to create multi-fold negative impact on the nature. How to strike a balance between preservation of nature and progress of mankind is a question that most likely will remain unanswered forever...!!! This tussle between human's passion to make progress and nature's unforgiving nature to stop invasion was my inspiration behind this photo.Editing
Did basic color and exposure correction in Photoshop. Used Topaz plugin to reduce noise and Nik Software to get hint of HDR.In my camera bag
My camera Nikon D810, Nikon Fisheye lens, Nikon 10-24mm wide angle lens, Nikon 100mm macro lens, 2-3 spare batteries and 2 SD cards for 1 day of shoot is my gear on any given day. Not to forget, I always take Manfrotto carbon tripod with ball head. Depending on whether I am going on specialized shoots I, e.g. for birding, I use Nikon 600mm lens with 1.8x teleconvertor. I pack extension tubes if I am going to do macro photography. I always carry at least 3-4 pieces of microfiber and sheepskin leather to clear my lenses before and after the shoot.Feedback
Creativity is the key in photography. Photographers vision can make or break the photo. If you are showing the subject from usual perspective, using ordinary angles and composition then you need a surreal subject to grab your viewers attention. But if you get creative, think before you shoot, compose a photo with a story then a very ordinary subject can make an outstanding photo.
