Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken back in 2012 during my trip to Cancun, Mexico. Right next to my hotel (it's called Dreams Riviera Cancun I believe) there was a nice beach with an old lighthouse and an old broken boat.

Time

This was one of my favorite images during the trip. I woke up before dawn to catch this magnificent sunrise.

Lighting

This was all nature light, however, due to the limitation of camera I need to bracket 5 different exposure images and blend it together in post.

Equipment

This was shot on Nikon D800 with 14-24mm F2.8 lens. A Fesol tripod was also used during bracketing.

Inspiration

Whenever I travel to a new place, I will try to get up early and stay late for sunrise and sunset shot. The coast of Caribbean sea if beautiful, and it's more beautiful during sunset and sunrise.

Editing

Yes. This was a 5-exposure HDR shot blended together in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

I normally will have one wide angle zoom lens(ie. 14-24mm) and one telephoto zoom lens (70-200m) in my bag. Occasionally I would also bring a 50mm prime lens for street and low light shot. For filters, I just use circular polarizer(for removing reflections) and ND filter (for slowing down shutter speed).

Feedback

The best advice I can think of is "Be in the right place at the right time". This picture will not be as colorful and impactful if it was taken during bright day light.
