Location
This beautiful Zebra was taken in South Luangwa National park in Zambia. I was there with my partner on a holiday in the Green season (just after the rains), most of the park was in excess able.Time
After driving around since 5am and seeing a lot of animals we stopped in an opening where this Zebra was grazing. It was mid day March 2014. I took a few photos trying out the harsh sunlight when he looked back. Being mid day there wasn't many shadows. and he was in a beautiful field of grass.Lighting
Mid day sun in the African bush isn't normally the time of day you would be driving around. Light is a bit harsh but for this occasion it worked out ok. Reduced a lot of the shadows.Equipment
This shot was taken with a Canon 5D mark iii and a 300mm f/2.8L IS USM lens. 1/640 sec at f/9.0 ISO 640.Inspiration
I thought of the vast space the zebra was in and the green grass. It was the only zebra at the time amongst some wildebeest to his left. I wasn't sure I could capture the lonely mood it showed.Editing
Because of the distance and being in the african bush there are always obstructions and colour challenges. I changed to black and white for the contrast. The green was too overpowering. I cropped a bit of the top and side off to give the photo some balance. Shooting in RAW I often have to process the photo. In my camera bag
Not being a professional photographer but a keen photographer I have a few this I take to Africa with me. I have two Canon 5D mark iii, one with a tele lens, either the 300mm or a 600mm lens and the second camera with a 70-200mm f/2.8 when the animals closer. I often carry a canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II to take some landscapes.Feedback
Africa or any wild life is unpredictable. So you have to be always ready for there next move so patience is a must. Frame you picture and it doesn't have to be text book. This Zebra is looking away from the rest of the photo, I think this is why it makes it different.
