Behind The Lens

Location

Each photo in the composite was taken in Janesville, Wisconsin. I photographed the little girl holding the snow globe outside in front of a pine tree, and I took the photo of the ballerina outside at a local residential park.

Time

Both photos were taken late morning, before noon.

Lighting

My forte is natural light, so I wanted this project to reflect what I do best. I didn't want any harsh shadows, so I photographed both subjects with overcast weather, resulting in even natural light.

Equipment

This composite was shot with a Canon 60D, 85mm/1.8, and a tripod.

Inspiration

My favorite holiday is Christmas, and when I was a little girl, I dreamed of becoming a professional ballerina. Understanding years later that my passion is photography, I've found that ballerinas are my favorite subjects to photograph. There's something beautiful about the dynamic combination of something so graceful with an urban or rural backdrop. This photo idea encompassed the wonder, curiosity, and fascination of every child dreaming of his or her future, and especially during the magic of the holiday season.

Editing

Yes, with the photo being a composite, both photos were heavily photoshopped to make everything blend together. Also, I added a soft layer of snow to the existing falling snowflakes. In the globe, I blended the ballerina to make it look like she was a figurine, and layered in falling snow different than the snow of the little girl. My editing style is defined as color desaturation with minimal contrast; even though this was my first composite project, I still wanted the edit to reflect my signature style.

Feedback

For composites, similar lighting and editing style is key. You want your vision to come to life at the end.
