Behind The Lens
Location
We spent a few days in this very isolated fishing village Tarrafal, on the island of Santo Antão, in the Cape Verde archipelago and we pretty much had 2 kilometres or so of this gorgeous black sand beach pretty much to ourselves the entire time...Time
It was just a bit before noon, no clouds in the skies and the hot equatorial Sun beating down on us with quite some intensity...Lighting
Blasting sunlight :) I wanted a sharp shadow on the ground and that was not difficult at all, with such a direct and strong sunlight, but the best thing was that the extremely wet sand, although black, reflected enough light to provide a lot of indirect lighting...Equipment
This just serves to support that adage that the best camera is the one you have with you - would I have preferred to have my Olympus back there, sure, but the GoPro was the only thing we had with us and that is what we used :)Inspiration
Well, what did not? :) The super high contrast provided by the direct sunlight and the seemingly endless expanse of the black sand, the intense sparkling of the Atlantic ocean waves, the giant fiery ball in the skies just above the towering cliffs... Also, we were just having fun :)Editing
Well, apart from straightening it a little, only the obvious - converting to black and white and ramping up the contrast... I was toying with the idea of removing the footsteps in the sand, but ultimately did not like it, so...In my camera bag
I embraced miniaturisation and went smaller and smaller as the years went by, so my extensive 645 Mamiya kit was replaced by Canon 5D and L lenses in their various iterations, only for them to be absolutely successfully supplanted by a m43 kit, which, I must say, reignited my love for photography big time. So, my kit now comprises of Olympus E-M1 and a number of Olympus lenses - 7-14 F2.8, 40-150 F2.8, 12-100 F4, 60 F2.8 macro, and pretty much all their fast primes... getting ready to purchase 300 F4 as well... I also carry a Sirui aluminium tripod (an amazing, unbeatable value for money), timelapse controller (Radian), spare body (Olympus E-PL7)... I also have a Panasonic GH4, for video work, but it does not see much photography action - I somehow just feel more "at home" with the Olympus equipment for photo work...Feedback
Well, the GoPro is not really an amazing photography tool, ours does not even have a display and the shutter lag is, well, lagging, for the luck of a better word... The first issue is not that important since its field of view is so large that as long as you are loosely pointing it in the direction of the subject, you will likely be fine, and as far as the second one is concerned, we almost always use the 10 images burst and it has saved a number of shots thus far...
