Location
This photo was taken in Venice from the bridge over the Grand Canal at Accademia.Time
The photo was taken in October at around 6.48am just before sunrise.Lighting
The scene looks very tranquil and serine but in reality the bridge was fairly crowded with photographers. I had left our hotel about 15 minutes walk away at about 6.00am but there were so many great subjects to see and photograph on the way that it was fairly busy on the wooden bridge at Accademia but I got there just in time as the light in the sky appeared. The buildings on the left are illuminated with artificial light but there is some great reflected light on the buildings on the right. After this shot I turned the camera a little to the right to capture the light reflected off the buildings which also made some great shotsEquipment
I used a Canon 7D with a 17-40 lens set at 21mm @ f11. As we were on a 3-day mini break I only had a small Hama travel tripod with fairly flimsy legs and it just managed to be tall enough fully extended to clear the railings on the bridge but it was susceptible to movement on the bridge as people crossed.Inspiration
Venice is such a romantic and historic city with great architecture-the only thing you need to add is great light.Editing
The image was from a 3-exposure HDR using photomatix but then I did some cloning around the moving boat to remove some of the reflected lightsIn my camera bag
When on short trips like this I usually have the Canon 7D, Sigma 10-20mm, Canon 17-40mm, Canon 70-200 and 1.4 converter. I also have a canon G16 and the Hama travel tripod. I usually leave filters etc at home as my time for photography on these trips is limitedFeedback
Always have your camera with you and go out even if the weather does not look too promising. 10 minutes before the shot above the sky was fairly dull and cloudy-but it can all change in seconds.
