Behind The Lens

Location

It was taken at Bradgate Park in Leicestershire, England.

Time

It was about an hour or so after sunrise, so maybe 8am in the October deer rut.

Lighting

It was a rainy, miserable start to the morning but I had noticed the cloud cover beginning to thin out a little and the rain stopping. I noticed the deer was staring right at me, and even though the lighting wasn't ideal, it lit him perfectly for the shot.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D7100, Tamron 200-400mm lens and Benro tripod.

Inspiration

I was almost going to give up, the weather wasn't great and the deer were few and far between. On my way back to a previous position I noticed the deer staring right at me. I couldn't believe my luck, definitely a right place at the right time moment. This was the only good shot I got that morning.

Editing

Very little on this shot. Other than a little noise reduction and sharpening, its pretty much as it came out of the camera.

In my camera bag

I normally carry a full bag of equipment so I'm ready for any shot that might present itself. Its seems a lot, but I've been caught out before when a shot presents itself and I've not got the right kit! Nikon D7100 Tamron 90mm Macro f/2.8 Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 Tokina 50-135mm f/2.8 Tamron 200-400mm f/5.6 Formatt Hitech Filter holder/adapter with Graduated ND, Reverse Graduates ND, and ND Filters Hoya Polariser Cable release

Feedback

Get up early and go out no matter the weather. All you need is a break in the weather to get the shot. The best time for the deer rut is early morning as the sun rises, as they seem to be the most active. Dusk is also good but it tends to attract more photographers and can get crowded. And don't give up, it might take a few trips to get a shot, but perseverance pays off in the end!
