Behind The Lens

Location

That photo was taken on a bike trip, near my small home town in upper Bavaria, Germany. There was this huge, almost endless field of wheat with one lonely tree standing between the fields, so I stopped took my camera out and took a picture of it.

Time

It was late afternoon, but still about 2 hours before the golden hour, so the light was not so good. I later created that golden – orange glowing look in post – processing. The exact time and date this picture was taken is May, 17th, 2015 at 5:30 PM.

Lighting

As I mentioned the light was not what you normally wish for, when taking pictures of landscapes, but I think I managed to get the best out of it, with a little bit of manipulation.

Equipment

For that picture I used my SONY A58 with my 50mm, 1.8 prime lens. It was the first lens, that I bought for my camera, as I was just starting out with photography. Since I was biking I only had the camera and that prime lens with me, no tripod or anything else. I had to combine three different shots into one panorama to get the wide scene in one picture with that lens.

Inspiration

That place had just this certain atmosphere at that time of the year with those huge, vast wheat fields and that one lonely tree in the middle of them, that it just caught my eye. I just had to take that picture because of that strong, but simple message that it would have.

Editing

All the post-processing was done in Lightroom. Firstly, the three shots have been combined to one, then I made adjustments on the white balance to give it that golden-orange look. Also I added orange to the highlights and some blue-magenta to the shadows in the split toning. The original picture was pretty flat, because of the bad light, that was there at that time of the day, so I bumped up the overall contrast to give it that dramatic look.

In my camera bag

MY camera is a SONY A 58 with a translucent mirror. As a tripod I have the Vanguard Alta Pro with a pistol ball head with me. My standard go to lens is still the SONY 50mm 1.8, because of it’s incredible sharpness and flexibility. I also have a TAMRON 70-300mm for Animal or Sports Photography and a TAMRON 10-24mm for the wide angle landscape shots.

Feedback

As this photo hasn’t been planned at all, the only advice I can give here is: always carry your camera with you! It doesn’t have to be expensive and you don’t have to carry a lot of gear with you, as long as you have your camera with a nice lens on it and you are ready to take that shot, when you see the opportunity. That specific shot has been taken without a tripod with a fast aperture at f 4,5 and 1/1000 sec. Also I focused on the tree, so that the foreground would be out of focus to create a sense of depth.
