Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in on the sunny side of The English Riviera Torquay.

Time

This is my favourite image captured from the shoot. The photo was taken around 14:00 (2pm) on 19th April 2015.

Lighting

For this image I wanted it to look as natural as possible because of the nature of the shoot so we opted to only use natural light which was behind the beautiful model bride and to fill in the shadows I had my wonderful assistant off to the side with a gold reflector to give a lovely warm glow.

Equipment

Camera - Nikon D7000 Lens - Samyang 85mm F1.4 5 in 1 reflector (Gold side)

Inspiration

My inspiration behind was the brides piercing blue eyes and blonde hair, my aim was to have such a contrasting colour in the background, that it would make her appear to be more alive in photo.

Editing

My post processing for this photo was very simple as I had a professional hair stylist and make up artist with me on location for the shoot. I started by correcting for any minor blemishes that where missed (this was only a couple), next I added some shadows to the brides hair, shoulders and facial features to give a stronger definition and give that 3d vibe to the image. I then proceeded to lighten and sharpen her eyes as I personally feel that it is the eyes that make the portrait so beautiful.

In my camera bag

The first thing that I always pack in my camera bag (I said it first thing, even before the camera) is my Samyang 85mm F1.4 lens, this is my go to for that beautiful defocused background which is perfect for portraits. Also in my bag I have my trusty Nikon D600, Sigma 24-70mm F2.8, 5 in 1 reflector, 4x flashguns (portable lighting), tripod and not forgetting the most important piece of equipment a flask of coffee for those long days out on location.

Feedback

The biggest advice I can give anyone is to plan ahead: - What are you wanting to capture - Is the weather going to play a factor - Always take more equipment than you think you will need because if you don't pack it you may regret it. (I have made that mistake a couple times) - Follow the light and find open shade (Harsh sunlight can hurt the image) - Always get it close to perfect in the camera (Remember photoshop is to enhance the photo not to be your knight in shining armor - the client will appreciate it more) - Have fun because if the client sees you having fun then they will to.
